Goliath is the world’s largest backhoe dredger – and the Aberdeen Harbor expansion team chose a GoPro to really see it in action.

The aptly named vessel operated by Van Oord, extending over 68 meters long, helped create the southern breakwater of the £ 350million project, as well as dredging activities for the entire site.

Aberdeen Harbor Board has released footage of the “Goliath Bucket Cam”, giving a unique perspective of what it takes to bring the southern harbor to its depth of up to 15 meters, the warning being to not look “if you don’t. ‘don’t like roller coasters’.

The expanded port is expected to begin a gradual opening later this year, with bosses saying that in December it was 70% complete.

The project is the largest maritime infrastructure development currently underway in the UK, having started in 2017.

When completed, the modernized facility will be Scotland’s largest mooring port and will accommodate vessels up to 1,000 feet in length.

Earlier this month, port board chairman Alistair McKenzie warned that the impacts of Covid have left funds for some green infrastructure projects during development in doubt, such as service trenches. for clean fuels and the electrification of docks.

However, he said administrators “were still hopeful that a solution could be found” and would now look to the UK government for their support.
