Tahith Chong gets big chance on loan but concedes crucial penalty

Yesterday winger Tahith Chong was offered a big opportunity for his loan club Werder Bremen.

The loaned Manchester United player replaced first-choice Milot Rashica who was sent off until the end of January due to a thigh tendon injury.

Without the start of the championship since October, it was the luck Chong had been waiting for, but it didn’t turn out the way he hoped it would.

Bremen lost 2-1 at home to Stuttgart, and Chong had an afternoon to forget.

In the 29th minute, he awarded a penalty for an awkward tackle. Silas Wamangituka converted him to give the visitors the 1-0 advantage.

11 minutes later, Chong was booked for a reckless scissoring challenge, which could have resulted in stricter punishment on another day.

Speaking after the game, Chong told Bremen club media: “We started the match well and we had no chance to go behind.

“We tried everything after that, especially in the second half. I am frustrated with the end result overall.

To defend Chong, he obviously lacks sharpness, this match being only the third start of the league in his loan period.

He was probably eager to impress given a big opportunity, but his desire to get stuck didn’t produce the best results.

The good news for him is that he should have more chances given the length of Rashica’s absence.

That said, it wasn’t a good first attempt to replace the Bremen talisman.

According to Who scored, he landed three shots in the game, but none of them went on target. He also failed to make a key pass in the game.

He was unable to fix the regular playing time he would have hoped for when he left United on loan this summer.

The missions won’t be any easier for Chong in the coming weeks, either.

Bremen’s next game will be against RB Leipzig on Saturday, who, of course, face United in this decisive Champions League clash tomorrow.

After that, it’s a meeting with Borussia Dortmund, which has two long-term goals for United at Erling Haaland and Jadon Sancho.

As tough as these games are, they can hardly be worse than yesterday.
