How the four Michigan players fared at the NBA G-League Elite Camp
Over the past few days, several members of the Michigan basketball team have participated in the NBA’s G-League Elite Camp, essentially a second tier Combine event. Chaundee Brown Jr., DeVante ‘Jones, Hunter Dickinson and Mike Smith were all measured, tested on their jump, speed and agility, and then entered two 5v5 scrum with the three dozen other players in attendance.
See below for a look at their performance, as well as our first takeaways from the event.

Additional Notes and Thoughts
While Brown’s draft stock may not be the highest in this group, he may have done himself the most service this weekend. Brown measured and tested well and then looked like one of the best two-way players on the pitch during scrum periods. His draft stock has always been away, but Brown may have left an impression on the teams as a legitimate 3-and-D option to pursue shortly after the draft ended.

Additional Notes and Thoughts
Even taking into account his position and size (he was the second tallest player in the event), Dickinson did not appear to be improving his draft stock in the testing section of the event – something which he had pointed out he had hoped to do last week. Dickinson has always performed well in the 5v5 portions, even with some difficulty with the turnovers. Either way, the lack of an NBA Combine invite is the most telling indication of how teams view Dickinson, and while Dickinson has faith in him, that perception might not be high enough to that he stays in this year’s draft.

Additional Notes and Thoughts
Playing in a camp made up mostly of top basketball players, Jones looked right at home. He displayed speed, measured at a legitimate high (and potentially professional) height, and overcame a relatively lackluster test section with a balanced and aggressive 5v5 performance. Jones remains on the outside looking for the draft. of the NBA, but helped himself this weekend. He’s also expressed a strong desire to turn pro now if he can (remember Jones already graduated). If he feels like he can land a two-way contract, Jones might choose to try his luck against the pros now. Otherwise, Michigan potentially gets one of the best transfers in the entire country with their team next season.

Additional Notes and Thoughts
Smith is still fighting the same battle he has fought with the scouts for years, as he measured a lot less than anyone else in the event. His tests showed good speed and he looked strong in one of his two games in the 5v5 period, but he probably didn’t show enough during the live evaluation period to appear on the boards. anyone’s selection. One team will likely give him a chance, but with little to no buzz about his performance, it seems likely that Smith would start his NBA career in the G-League.
