West’s Country Mart has restarted its annual Apples for Students campaign.

Customers shopping at West’s can drop their receipts in boxes with the names of local schools, and the grocery store will donate money to those schools for needed supplies, ranging from markers to digital cameras.

Store manager Chris West said the program was national and raised a total of around $ 900,000 last year for schools across the country.

Schools in Dickinson County are one of them.

“For every dollar they spend on groceries, they get 1,000 points, and then school districts add up those receipts,†West said.

Schools can select items from a catalog to spend these points. The schools order them, the company ships them directly to the schools, and the grocery store covers the costs.

“It’s a good program to show our support for the community and the local schools,†West said. “It’s not just the schools in Abilene. It’s also Hope, it’s Chapman and Solomon. It is therefore about supporting the communities around us and the school districts. And you know (it’s) kind of a thank you to those people who shop with us – for helping their kids and the school.

West Country Mart has been doing this for about 10 to 15 years, he said. West said it was something the wholesaler at the grocery store was offering.

According to West, the company offered a scholarship to a local student every year, but it looked like the company could do more good for more people through a program like Apples for the Students. The West Country Mart has therefore made the switch.

West said he didn’t know how much the program raised for local schools last year.

He also said there was no set goal for fundraising.

“We’re not setting a goal,†West said. “We just hope it increases every year. This is our hope. It’s a simple program. All people have to do is put that receipt in the box. You pay for your groceries, you get your receipt and as you walk through the door you just drop it in that box.

The program doesn’t accept donations of money or supplies, he said – just receipts.

“You just bought groceries,†West said. “Whether it’s a gallon of milk, a loaf of bread, a candy bar or a soda – all that, even if it’s maybe $ 1, $ 2 – just drop that receipt in the box and it counts towards their total. “
