The Pentagon’s research arm, DARPA, has proposed aerial refueling tankers, using laser beams.
The concept is based on the transfer of heat and electrical energy using a laser beam by pointing it at a specific area.
It can be transferred via air, space and fiber optics.

New Delhi: Drones or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are undoubtedly a key part of the future of warfare, with their weak heat signatures and even weaker radar signatures, and they are also difficult to spot visually. However, with the changing times, even drones have to upgrade, and in the process, next-generation drones in the United States are expected to be equipped with wireless aerial refueling with laser beams.

Drones are constantly evolving, as are the technologies to counter their impact. They are still less risky than a fighter jet for engaging the enemy, as they are not very easy to spot, can engage at long enough ranges, and are not as expensive as fighter jets.

With these factors in mind, drones are obviously going to play an important role in future warfare and with that comes the need to make them even better and more practical with advanced range and better efficiency. For this, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the research arm of the Pentagon, has proposed tanker planes, using laser beams.

The concept is based on the usual transfer of heat and electrical energy using a laser beam by pointing it at a specific area and can be transferred via air, space and fiber optics.

This technology will help improve the range of unmanned aircraft systems. DARPA intends to prepare a five-year program for the same, primarily for swarm combat drones and other unspecified uses according to media reports.

DARPA has issued an advisory asking industry stakeholders to verify the viability of deploying manned tanker aircraft modified to wirelessly deliver fuel to unmanned aerial vehicles through laser beams.

This could prove revolutionary for the US military if successful.

DARPA is preferably looking for solutions that can be modified and adjusted in already existing aircraft for UAVs.
