1. Texas Restaurants and Small Businesses Get Green Light on COVID-19 Loans. Federal aid program for restaurants and other small businesses ran out of money – but not before some large companies got reduced checks, while small businesses were cut entirely. According to the Texas Restaurant Association, not only did hundreds of small operators across Texas not get loans, they couldn’t even get a response.

2. Texas reopens state parks and retail stores – but schools are closed. Encouraged by a perceived slowdown in the spread of COVID-19, Gov. Greg Abbott said on April 17 he was reopening the state of Texas in stages, including the immediate reopening of state parks April 20. Retail stores would be allowed to reopen on April 24 for pickup and delivery. However, schools are closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 year.

3. Colleyville defies state orders and reopens churches and restaurants. Defying a lockdown across Texas along with most basic common sense, the city of Colleyville has allowed churches, restaurants and other businesses to reopen with certain limitations, despite an unresolved end to the coronavirus pandemic. This, according to a proclamation published April 20 by Colleyville Mayor Richard Newton.

4. Second wave of COVID-19 openings and closures sweep through Dallas restaurants. With the duration of the coronavirus now stretching through April and possibly beyond, restaurants in Dallas are undergoing a change: some greats who have tried to hang on are closing their doors; others have recovered and are making a comeback. Here is the latest wave of openings and closings.

5. 3 Dallas high schools topped the class in a prestigious ranking. A few schools in Texas have been working hard to earn extra credits, according to the latest ranking from American News and World Report. Its list of America’s Best High Schools, released April 21, includes two Dallas public schools in the national top 10, with several other Texas educational institutions appearing further down.
