Samsung was a global pioneer of foldable phones, persevering with the technology even when it had some initial pains. With two Samsung Galaxy Z Fold handsets already under its belt, Samsung is currently preparing to launch the third iteration – the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3.
Recent rumors had suggested that there wouldn’t be a major camera upgrade for this new foldable handset, with the Z Fold 3 continuing to offer the same 12 MP rear cameras as the Z Fold 2. However, a new leak reports that while the megapixel count may stay the same, the Z Fold 3 cameras will actually offer a pretty substantial update to the autofocus system.

According to the Twitter leaker @FrontTron (via Forbes), the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3’s three 12MP rear cameras will support phase detection autofocus. This would bring autofocus capabilities to the ultra-wide camera for the first time, which should improve the quality of ultra-wide photos. It could also allow close-up macro photography (interestingly, Apple would also consider adding this feature to an iPhone 13 Pro model).
So what exactly is phase detection autofocus? Used primarily in the best DSLRs, phase detection originally used mirrors to reflect copies of light from the main sensor to the dedicated phase detection sensor. However, camera phones have much less physical space than DSLR cameras, so they will have dedicated PDAF pixels. integrated into the image sensor rather.
Phase detection autofocus is known to be much faster than contrast detection, which is simpler and cheaper to manufacture.
