BISMARCK, ND (KFYR) – North Dakota Outdoors Magazine from the North Dakota Game and Fish Department celebrates 90 years of publication this year.

“Lawmakers said we need a vehicle to correspond with people. And that vehicle was North Dakota Outdoors, â€said Ron Wilson, editor of ND Outdoors magazine.

Wilson said he flipped through most of the magazines in the early years, many of the same challenges remain today.

“The things we face 50 years ago, 60 years ago, 30 years ago are the same as what we are facing now. You know the access, the habitat is huge, you know, Mother Nature, what she does to put animals on the earth or take them away, â€Wilson said.

And the attention of agency staff remained unwavering.

“I think this magazine is about the stewardship of the agency, it’s about us doing our best to take care of the resources so that the people who buy licenses, fish, hunt or just don’t buy fish. allowed and just want to go out and enjoy the outdoors, we do our best to provide those opportunities, â€Wilson said.

Digital platforms such as websites and other social media made it easy for readers to get their hands on the magazine.

“What the magazine looks like today compared to what it looked like when I started 19 years ago is night and day. And it all has to do with technology. But technology has taken giant leaps in this magazine, â€Wilson said.

Photos of wildlife, habitat, and field biologists help illustrate the magazine’s stories. And with modern technology and digital cameras, the photo quality is amazing.

“The people that we have taking pictures for us, you know, they’re doing an amazing job,†Wilson said.

Much of the magazine’s success over the past 90 years is due to the people who work for the North Dakota Game and Fish Department.

“We have a message to get across, and we want to do it as accurately as possible. And without biologists, administration, whoever, you know, there’s nothing we can do, â€Wilson said.
