MUMBAI: One rickshaw driver who could not repay a to lend taken to buy her returned vehicle silver and gold worth Rs 14 lakh forgotten by a passenger on Sunday. Rickshaw driver Iftikhar Shaikh (40), who was unable to repay the loan due to the lockdown, was congratulated by the police for their honesty.
Touched by the congratulations, Iftikhar, a resident of Mira Road, said he had lived his life honestly.
On Sunday, Iftikhar picked up a female passenger, Nazneen Shaikh, and dropped her off on the highway in Kashimira. The woman had to take a bus to Gujarat. Later, Iftikhar carried a few passengers in and around Mira Road before returning home.
The next day, while cleaning his car, he found a bag in the space behind the passenger seat. He found money and jewelry inside.
Iftikhar immediately went to the Kashimira police station and turned the bag over to the police. He gave details of the passengers he dropped off on Sunday but was not sure who the bag belonged to.
Police found a cell phone in the bag. The number was assigned to Nazneen who abandoned his trip to Gujarat due to the lost bag. She had looked for the rickshaw driver but had not gone to the police.
The cops checked his contact details and handed him the bag containing money and valuables worth Rs 14 lakh. Iftikhar was called to the police station to confirm whether he had dropped off Nazneen on Sunday.
It was then that the cops learned that Iftikhar had taken out a loan to buy the rickshaw. During the lockdown, his business suffered and he has not been able to repay the monthly payments for the vehicle since October. Iftikhar told police he was working overtime to save money and pay off the loan.
