CHRIS SMALLING faces a spell on the sidelines after sustaining a muscle injury.
Roma center-back limped out after just 30 minutes against Napoli, replaced by former Tottenham defender Federico Fazio.
Smalling’s side lost 2-1 but it could be further misery for the Manchester United player on loan.
He could be out for several matches but will find out his fate after being assessed by Roma medics this week.
This puts an end to the 30-year-old’s new found form in Italy, which brings the former England international one step closer to a permanent transfer.
According to the Roman radio station Tele Radio Stereo, an agreement has already been made which will see Smalling will be on loan next season before Roma sign the defender.
It is understood that Roma will effectively buy Smalling this summer, with the payment spread over two seasons ending in 2022.
The Italians have reportedly struck a deal worth £ 15-16million.
United had kept around £ 25million but appear to have lowered their valuation.
Small has played 32 times this season scoring twice.
Old Trafford boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has appeared the defender is teaming up with record signing Harry Maguire – who was brutally muscled against Bournemouth.
But with Smalling appearing to be keen to stay in the Italian capital, United were forced to negotiate a selling fee.
