The Rudder star missed the whole of 2021 with an injury at UCL, and now he must decide his future in baseball

BRYAN, Texas – Hunter Dobbins hasn’t been in a real baseball game for a long time.

“That first hitter that gets in there is definitely going to be the recipient of some accumulated anger,” Dobbins told KAGS.

His 2020 season at Texas Tech has been cut short due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In an inter-team scrum two weeks before the start of the 2021 season, the former Rudder star suffered an injury at UCL and had to miss the entire season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

“If it was up to me, I feel like I can pitch now, but that’s definitely why it’s not up to me,” he says. “I’m feeling good, I’m getting stronger, and I’m really looking forward to next year.”

Next year is a bit uncertain for Dobbins, however. He might hear his name called out in the next MLB Draft and decide to go pro. He also has the option of returning to Lubbock for his junior year.

Dobbins says he won’t make that decision until he has all the information he needs, but he knows he’s working hard to get back better than before.

“We have so much progress that I trust the guys who operated on me and I look forward to the results at the end,” he said.

One of those results could be an increase in its speed. The right-handed flamethrower was already peaking at 98 mph with his fastball before injuring himself.

“I’m going to be as excited as the fans to see the triple digits on the board. It may take a minute to refocus, but I think there is a possibility,” he said.

The first round of the MLB Draft begins Sunday.
