Plot of the movie Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Waking up from one of the most exhilarating dreams, Strange travels to Christine’s wedding. Within a day, he realizes that the dream he saw might be something more than that. Doctor Strange tackles a kind of problem no one ever dreamed of and with it is the newest addition to the franchise, America Chavez.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness movie review

As far back as I can remember, Marvel is definitely one of the most popular franchises in the world. His films are anticipated over the years and his series flow over the analyzes in the smallest details. In 2021, Marvel began its Phase 4 with the WandaVision series starring Elizabeth Olsen. In May 2022, they released what was one of the most anticipated Phase 4 films, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the title character, the film is one of the most convoluted stories of the phase and the franchise in general. Doctor Strange has encountered the subject of the multiverse a few times before this film, the most recent being with Spider Man. This is one of those areas that Stephen probably doesn’t include in addition to his expertise due to anyone’s ignorance.

The introduction of America Chavez in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

When he wakes up from an uplifting dream, Stephen decides not to think about it too much and moves on to his ex-girlfriend’s wedding. An event that I suspect would have been taxing enough on its own, Strange then has to save people from a one-eyed monster. This event is where we are introduced to the latest superhero, America Chavez.

It won’t be the first time you’ve seen it, but it will be the first time it has context. She introduces herself to Strange and Wong (who have joined Strange in destroying the monster) and from that moment begins the film’s complicated turmoil.

There are a lot of things happening in the film. However, there is something completely offbeat in the 2 hours we spend at the theatre. There are plenty of times the story will have you gasping audibly and even a few that will have you shouting profanities at the screen, but overall the movie seemed to be a lot messier than expected.

The movie’s incredible story is turned upside down by bad choices

There were some great moments in the film that I choose not to mention here simply because even with all the complaints I have for the film, I will urge everyone to watch it. The story of the film is out of this world (literally and metaphorically) and on top of that the cast gave such a great performance that it would be an injustice for fans not to revel in it.

Let’s move on to the parts that really pissed me off. The camera work was so poor. Not for the entire duration of the movie, but in some specific (and very important) scenes, the camera looked like a cheap go pro had been attached to a free will stand that captured the game in the most random. If it was to communicate how random the entire moment for the characters was, it unfortunately wasn’t communicated well.

In addition to the highly questionable cinematography, there was the editing. There is no justification for how some of the scene changes were made. There was a scene change that involved the previous scene being blurred out of Wong’s face in order to start the next scene with Wong. It felt like the laziest transition ever. For a full minute, I dealt with this transition rather than anything Wong was worried about.

One thing viewers need to keep in mind is that they can’t get out of the movie at all. Every second some piece of information is given that is super important for story building. As the film is context-heavy, missing small details can leave the viewer grasping for flaws near the end. It’s both a truly amazing experience as a fan and a boring experience for those who don’t really care about Marvel.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness introduces a variety of new people

As mentioned earlier, there is a lot going on in the movie. There are many new faces and several new storylines. It’s the kind of experience that draws the viewer in and invests them in every storyline. Yet something was missing. It was as if Marvel wrote every shock point on a whim. While that would leave fans on the edge of their seats confused and shocked, it also kept certain topics on their toes. One might wonder if Marvel has a plan for how this will work towards the end and indeed for the rest of Marvel’s future.

Marvel fans know that a movie like this determines the rest of the fandom’s journey and yet this movie gave no such direction. He didn’t answer or ask anything. It was more informative than building. I wouldn’t say the film lacked thought because none of Wanda’s battles in the film were like “the usual”. In fact, the movie itself was completely unique from anything Marvel has done. Perhaps it was the uniqueness that Marvel was aiming for for the film that they lost where they were headed.

That said, Phase 4 was about Marvel heading into a new world, so there might be something just as whimsical to look forward to. With the technical aspects of the film irritating me to no end, the actors raised all the standards. They went beyond the expectations they had. Elizabeth Olsen gave a life-changing performance and Cumberbatch gave such a shocking yet charming performance. Shocker, once you see the movie.

Wong should have had more screen time because he was so cute and his character was hilarious. Special mention to early Marvel Xochitl who stole my heart and interest by making America so adorable and perfect.

Film Culture Synopsis

A film that I will drag one into the theater to watch but after a really informative speech. This requires an understanding of several previous productions and also the full attention of the viewer. The speech I would give for the film will also include a warning about the technical aspects of the film which should be overlooked because after ignoring the film is a very good production.
