Canon launches new 4-in-1 multifunction printer

Canon has further expanded its already extensive line of home office printers with the PIXMA TR4720. A 4-in-1 machine, the TR4720 can print, copy, scan and even fax, in addition to offering several connectivity options, including wireless direct printing through Canon’s mobile device apps.

The printer also has voice-activated smart assistant support for compatible Amazon Alexa and Google Home devices. A 100-sheet front paper tray allows easy, space-saving loading of media, while scanning and copying multiple pages is made possible by the top-mounted automatic document feeder. The TR4720 is also capable of automatic two-sided printing to save paper.

Unusually for modern printers, the TR4720 makes do with a single black ink cartridge and a single multi-color ink cartridge, although XL capacity cartridges are available to dramatically improve print yields. The print resolution reaches 4800 x 1200 dpi, with the black cartridge using pigment ink for richer text definition and the color cartridge using dye-based ink for smoother color gradations. The maximum print speed is 8.8ipm in monochrome and 4.4p in color, with 6×4-inch borderless color printing emerging in about 65 seconds.

The flatbed scanner atop the TR4720 offers a maximum scanning resolution of 600 x 1200 dpi, and it can be controlled by a simple 2-line LCD screen next to it – no large color touchscreen here, unfortunately. A numeric keypad is however present to help send faxes using the built-in 33.6 kbps fax modem.

Available in white or black exterior finishes, the PIXMA TR4720 is reasonably compact at 17.2 “(W) x 11.7” (D) x 7.5 “(H), and weighs 12.7 lbs. It is now available in the US, priced at $ 99.99.

The launch coincides with the European release of the new PIXMA TR4650, which, although it has been given a different model number, appears to be identical in design and specifications to the TR4720.
